Buying Power Tools

Buying Power ToolsModern battery technology and advances in energy storage capabilities have made it possible for cordless power tools to be more powerful, long lived and easier to use through better manual balance. As well as the freedom offered by tools such as cordless drills or cordless circular saws, the ease of handling greatly improves productivity and efficiency, especially for tradesmen. When purchasing power tools for any use, it is important to balance your needs against your budget. Here’s how.

Brand and Price

It is very important to learn to ignore the “look” of cordless tools as a way to judge their quality. Most people don’t realise that there are actually only three or four major manufacturers for the motors, bearings and other internal components that are used by more or less every brand on the market. Brand awareness remains strong and is often used as a key judge of quality, but often without understanding why.

For example, many DIY enthusiasts believe that Black and Decker are not as good as they used to be, but in fact the same motors, bearings and switches from Black and Decker tools also go into DeWalt tools and other brands which are perceived as “better” and sell for higher prices, despite being functionally no different.

The best motors on today’s market tend to go into Hitatchi tools, Makita power tools and Ryobi tools. These brands often exhibit a very good torque for their size, and their bearings are made of harder steel which means they are higher quality. Despite this they still often retail at slightly lower prices as they are commonly less well known brands.

Use and Application

The key thing to consider when planning how much to spend on power tools is how heavily and how often you will use them. For example, purchasing the most high end cordless drill driver is a bit pointless if you’ll only use it once or twice a year. Don’t worry about reselling – second hand power tools are often a very cheap option simply because even the best ones do not hold much value.
