Uses of Recycled Plastic

Recycling and eco living has been a feature in domestic households for some time now as the majority of plastics can be recycled into a range of new products. This has endless economic benefit as landfill space is saved as well as a reduction in the need for expensive oil to create new products. Also, recycled plastics means there is no need for refining processes which release harmful toxins into the atmosphere. What are the plastics that can be recycled and what are they used for?

7 forms of plastic are identified as being recyclable including:

  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
  • High density polyethylene (HDPE)
  • polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Low density polyethylene (LDPE)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polystyrene (PS)

There are many products that can be made from the recycling the plastics mentioned. For example, PET can be recycled into bottles, carpets, clothing, car parts and more. HDEP can also be made into bottles for laundry products as recycling bins, pipes, bags and plastic lumber. Larger corporations such as coca cola and marks and Spencer’s have committed to using recycled plastics in selected product lines to demonstrate their continuation to reducing their carbon footprint and conforming to environmental laws.

recycled plastic signageFor construction purposes, post and planks can be produced using recycled plastic and styled in a ‘wood effect.’ These planks can be cut and joined in a similar way to timber. They require no maintenance and are resistant to the effects of weathering and insect infestation. Recycled plastic signage has longevity and they can last a lot longer than wood products and is perfect for making hard-wearing interpretation displays and boards.
